On most CNC pipe benders the feed and rotation axes run on servo drives while the bend arm is pushed by a hydraulic cylinder. On an electric pipe bending machine the bend axis is servo-driven too — and on small-diameter tube that changes what the machine can do.
Apex builds servo-bend machines for tube up to Ø18 × 2 mm, alongside a hydraulic range reaching Ø168 × 8 mm. This page explains where the electric configuration is worth it and where it is not.
What Changes When the Bend Axis Is Servo
Speed. A servo bend arm accelerates and stops far faster than a cylinder, and it does not wait for oil to move. Feed reaches 1,200 mm/sec and rotation 250°/sec on our servo machines — the fastest in the range by a wide margin.
Bend angle under program control. A hydraulic bend arm is positioned by a stroke limit. A servo axis holds the programmed angle directly, which is why these machines are described as three-axis: feed, rotation and bend are all controlled.
Connected load. Total power on our servo machine is 3.95 kW against 15.8 kW on the smallest hydraulic bender and 45.5 kW on the largest. Less oil to move means less energy to move it.
Less oil, not no oil. Worth being precise: the bend axis is servo, but clamping remains hydraulic on a 1.5 kW pump with a 100 L tank. Anyone describing a machine in this class as fully oil-free is overstating it. The hydraulic system is much smaller, and that is the honest claim.
Why Only Small Diameters
Bending force scales with the section of the tube. At Ø18 × 2 mm the torque required is modest, and a servo motor with a gearbox delivers it economically.
At Ø168 × 8 mm the force is an order of magnitude higher. Delivering that with servo drives means large motors and heavy reduction, and the cost climbs well above a hydraulic cylinder doing the same work. That is why our larger machines are hydraulic — not a compromise, but the right engineering answer at that size.
If your tube is larger than Ø38 mm, look at the hydraulic range. If it is small and your volumes are high, the electric machines here are faster and cheaper to run.
Typical Work
Small-diameter tube in volume: brake and fuel lines, hydraulic hard lines, refrigeration and condenser tubing, medical and laboratory frames, furniture detail work and instrument tubing.
These are parts with many bends in several planes on short segments, where the machine spends most of its cycle indexing rather than bending. That is exactly where servo acceleration pays back.
Tooling and Support
Each machine ships with one complete die set for a specified tube OD and bend radius — bend die, clamp die, pressure die, wiper die and mandrel. Die sets are size-specific, so tell us every OD and radius you plan to run and we will quote the full package rather than the machine alone.
Installation and operator training are available on site or remotely. Wear items ship from stock. Machines are built to 380 V / 50 Hz as standard, with 220 V or 480 V at 60 Hz to order.
