5 Axis CNC Pipe Bending Machine
The Apex 5-axis CNC pipe bending machine carries three die stacks and shifts between them automatically, so a part with two or three different bend radii runs as one uninterrupted cycle. No tooling change, no second setup, no transferring the part to another machine.
This is the machine for parts a 3-axis bender cannot finish in one pass — automotive exhaust assemblies that combine a tight radius at the manifold with a sweeping radius along the underbody, seat frames that mix structural and cosmetic bends, or heat-exchanger circuits where the return bend and the run bend are different radii.
What the Five Axes Control
Three axes handle the bend geometry, exactly as on a 3-axis machine:
Y axis — feed (distance between bends, DBB). Servo-driven carriage advances the tube to each bend start point, ±0.1 mm.
B axis — rotation (plane of bend, POB). Rotates the tube about its centreline to set the plane of the next bend, ±0.1°.
C axis — bend (degree of bend, DOB). Drives the bend arm through the programmed angle, up to 190°, ±0.1°.
The two additional axes position the tooling:
Z axis — vertical die shift. Raises and lowers the bend head so the programmed die stack aligns with the tube. This is what selects the bend radius mid-cycle.
X axis — horizontal shift. Moves the head in and out so the clamp die and pressure die seat correctly against the selected stack, and clears the part on retract.
Stack changes are part of the program, not an operator task. Changeover between radii takes [n] seconds and adds no scrap.

5 Axis vs 3 Axis — What You Are Actually Paying For
A 3 axis CNC pipe bending machine carries one die stack and bends one radius. For the majority of production parts that is enough, and it is the cheaper machine to buy and to tool.
The 5 axis machine earns its cost in three situations. First, when a single part needs two or three radii — on a 3 axis machine that means either a tooling change mid-batch or splitting the job across two machines, and both options introduce alignment error at the joint between operations.
Second, when you run short batches of many different parts. Loading a new program instead of physically re-tooling turns a [n]-minute changeover into a [n]-second one, which is where the payback shows up on a mixed-model production line.
Third, when the part has bends close enough together that a single-stack machine cannot clear the previously bent section. The vertical shift gives clearance a fixed head does not have.
If your parts all use one radius and you run long batches of the same item, buy the 3 axis machine and put the difference into tooling. We will tell you so if that is what your drawings show.

Frequently Asked Questions
What do the two extra axes on a 5 axis machine do?
They move the bend head vertically and horizontally so the machine can select a different die stack partway through a part. The three bending axes are the same as on a 3 axis machine.
How many bend radii can it produce in one part?
Up to three with the standard 3-stack head, with no tooling change and no operator intervention. A 2-stack configuration is available where a third radius is not needed.
Do I need 5 axes, or will 3 be enough?
Count the distinct bend radii on your drawings. One radius across the whole part means a 3 axis machine will do the job for less money. Two or more means either a 5 axis machine or a mid-batch tooling change on every part.
Can it bend thin-wall stainless without wrinkling?
Within the wall thickness and radius limits above, with correct mandrel and wiper die selection. Very thin wall at tight radii may need a boost axis — send the drawing and we will confirm before quoting.
How long is delivery?
